Google Opens Dublin Platform to Combat Toxic Online Contents

Alphabet Unit Google, on Wednesday, launched a centre to counter harmful web content, which is also intended to alleviate regulatory fears regarding how corporations and other tech firms are handling a growing epidemic on the Internet.

The world’s most popular search engine, along with other U.S. tech companies, has been critical of the proliferation of illicit and malicious content through their sites, sparking demands for further enforcement intervention.

The 27-country European Union has taken the lead in introducing strict new legislation to curtail their powers, shield smaller competitors and making them more accountable for deleting harmful material from their sites. The new regulations are scheduled to enter into effect in the next two years.

The Google Safety Innovation Center at Google’s European Headquarters in Dublin will concentrate on content responsibility and will be the first in the world for the organization, said Amanda Storey, Director of Trust and Safety, in a blog post.

“The new Dublin centre will be a regional hub for Google experts working to tackle the spread of illegal and harmful content and a place where we can share this work with policymakers, researchers, and regulators,” she said.

She added that it will allow people to appreciate the work of “trusted flaggers” and the manner in which accidents are tackled, but did not say how many will be working at the centre whose workers will work from home as long as the lock-down regulations are necessary.
