Elon Musk is pro Nuclear power, here is how

More than 79 scientists, academics, and entrepreneurs signed a letter to [California governor] Newsom on Thursday urging him to find a way to keep the plant open because of the necessary carbon-free, clean electricity it provides to the state’s electricity grid. Dr. Steven Chu, former US Secretary of Energy under the Obama administration and a Nobel laureate, and more than 79 other scientists, academics, and entrepreneurs signed the letter. Diablo Canyon now generates about 18,000 gigawatt-hours of clean power each year, accounting for nearly 10% of the state’s total electrical generation capacity. …

The letter was written by the nonprofit Save Clean Energy, which was formed specifically to fight the nuclear power plant’s closing…. The letter explains how Diablo Canyon is critical to the state’s clean energy goals, which it is legally required to meet, and how it appears unlikely that the state will be able to meet those goals with the plant’s current decommissioning schedule, which starts in November 2024 when the first of the plant’s two Nuclear Regulatory Licenses expires. …

The campaign to keep the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant open has recently gained traction after a report released in November by Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology claimed that keeping the plant open for another ten years would significantly help the state meet its clean energy goals.

A spokesperson for Newsom said in a statement to The Tribune in December that the governor had no plans to postpone the closure of Diablo Canyon. “California has the technology to meet its clean energy targets without jeopardising our energy security. Diverse renewable energy sources, increased energy storage, and grid climate resiliency are all part of the plan “In an email to The Tribune, Newsom spokesperson Erin Mellon said. “To replace the electricity supplied by Diablo Canyon, our retail energy providers are now in the process of buying new energy projects.”
