WhatsApp reportedly testing a new Bill Payment feature; Could be rolled out to users in India soon

WhatsApp users in India are currently allowed to send and request money from contacts while they can also make payments to businesses via Whatsapp’s existing UPI-based payment system, Whatsapp Pay. Previously, WhatsApp Pay could only add users in a phased manner, limiting its ability to scale up but recently National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) approved Whatsapp Pay to offer UPI services to all its 532 million Indian users.

Now after this approval, Android Authority in an APK teardown found that a new Bill Payment feature is being tested. A new Bill Payment feature reference has been found in WhatsApp’s beta version 2.25.3.15. It is said that WhatsApp could soon introduce the Bill Payment feature in India, taking on rivals like PhonePe and Google Pay.

With this feature, users are expected to pay various bills like Electricity bills, Mobile prepaid recharge, LPG as payments, Water bills, Landline postpaid bills, and rent payments. An empty activity for bill payments has been added in the latest beta version of the app.

Bill Payment feature was discovered in an APK teardown and is still in its development phase, so we may have to wait a bit for the official rollout of this feature. Once rolled out, it will eliminate the hassle for users of switching between different apps for payments.
