How should bankers avoid being targeted by cybercriminals?

Nowadays, bankers are at high risk since there are numerous ways that cybercriminals use to target and breach the data of the banking system.

Globally, the banking industry is constantly on the receiving end of cyber attackers. After the COVID pandemic started, the world immediately shifted to the digital world and became cashless.

Moreover, even the banks commenced the digital transfer system which led to the establishment of their apps.

Due to the massive use of such transfer apps, the cyber attackers got a great angle to execute their malicious plans of hacking and breaching the data of users in huge numbers.

Additionally, according to IBM’s “X-Force Threat Intelligence Index Report” for 2022, finance and insurance was the most attacked industry during the 2015 – 2020 period. And out of which, banks were majorly targeted.

How do cybercriminals execute the crime?

Earlier, the Cyber actors used Carbanak malware, which they used to attack internal processing and services of automated teller machines (ATMs).

Now, the cyber attackers attack banks with Phishing attacks and try to gain control over ATMs. However, the skills and ways which threat actors use are still new and hence it is far more successful than any other malware acts.

What measures should the bankers take to stop cyber criminals?

The banks have imposed several security and protection services for securing their customers’ data. But the bankers are due to impose certain security measures for keeping the bank’s internal system safe.

The following are some tips to secure the internal system of the banks:-

-These phishing campaigns, share emails, SMS to the users and ask them to click on random links which ask for personal details. That’s how they collect the victim’s personal details.

-During which, if some bankers use their work computers for their personal purposes. It may be the wrong step for the bank’s system.

-Majority of companies initially restrict their workers to use their work computers for personal use. But if the workers want to carry out their personal work on office Computers, one should use it very carefully.

-One should always check and scan any documents or pdf they receive in their emails. Also one should not click on any random links which claim to give you expensive gifts.

-Additionally, if you receive any SMS or WhatsApp message which encourages you to use any certain links for gaining any software for free or similar to that. You should not use it. Certain links may take away your personal details.

-Moreover, one should always have antivirus software on their computer which will prevent the computer from malware apps, links.

-Run a virus scanner on your system every week and keep your system up to date with windows/Mac updates.

-In case you feel something is strange with your system best way is to call your IT guy who can check your system. Or you may even reset your system to its default.
