Last year, Google made Android’s Quick Share interoperable with Apple’s AirDrop, starting with the Pixel 10 family. This made file transfer a lot easier between iPhones and Pixel 10 series devices, while this feature worked with iPadOS and macOS devices too.

The Android fans have been waiting since then for this capability to expand to more Android devices as well. The wait seems to be finally over, as according to a report by Android Authority, during a press briefing at Google’s Taipei office, Eric Kay, Vice President of Engineering for the Android platform, confirmed the expansion of Quick Share- AirDrop interoperability to more Android devices this year.

He said, “ Last year, we launched AirDrop interoperability. In 2026, we’re going to be expanding it to a lot more devices.” The company is revealed to be working with its partners to expand the functionality across the rest of the Android ecosystem, while some exciting announcements related to this will be made soon.

This suggests that the Quick Share- AirDrop interoperability will no longer be a Pixel-exclusive feature. Nothing CEO has already confirmed last year that they are working on a way to bring AirDrop compatibility to Nothing phones. Meanwhile, Qualcomm has also announced to bring this capability on Snapdragon powered phones as well in the near future.

It is also revealed that Google is working to make switching from iPhone to Android easier. Let’s see when we will get to hear the official announcement regarding the availability of these capabilities.

Back in September 2025, Preplexity introduced its AI-powered browser, Comet, for desktop, while the pre-registration for this browser started for Android users, but there was no info on when Comet would be released for Android.

Perplexity has now redesigned the mobile web browser for the new age of the internet, and today, the Comet browser is officially made available for Android.

Comet browser on Android

Comet Assistant: With your personal AI assistant one tap away, you can ask more questions and take action on the tasks you assign it to handle. You can see exactly what actions your Comet Assistant is taking and step in at any time.

Voice recognition technology: Perplexity has brought voice recognition technology to Comet for Android, allowing users to chat with their Comet Assistant to find information across all their open tabs.

Summarize your searches: Smart summarization on Comet for Android gives you the ability to summarize content across all your open tabs, not just the page you have open.

Focus on what matters: Avoid spam and pop-up ads with a built-in ad blocker. You can whitelist the sites you trust.

Comet for Android is said to have the industry’s most advanced native ad blocker built in that blocks distractions and provides a clean and clear browsing experience. The browser also remembers your open tabs and what you’re working on, so it can give quick answers that fit what you’re doing. Users can ask questions or get summaries right on any webpage. Comet helps you in research, summarizing, simplifying, shopping or learning.

You can install the Comet browser for Android via the Google Play Store.

Android via the Digital Credential API has now natively started supporting OpenID4VP for digital credential presentation. Also to add, for digital credential issuance, it also now supports OpenID4VCI.

Here’s more about the update.

Android Support for Digital Credentials Announced

For those of you who don’t know, digital credentials are nothing but cryptographically verifiable documents, and it is used to identify documents which includes passports, driver’s license, and many more. Its use cases in the future are believed to grow, and Android developers are expected to bring out many new innovative applications of this technology. To add, any installed Android apps can provide digital credentials, and such apps are termed as ‘credential holders’.

Speaking more, users can present digital credentials to any apps or websites on their respective devices, while it can also be securely presented between devices as well. Multiple credentials can also be stored across multiple apps too.

About its working, a credential can be presented when an OpenID4VP request is sent to the Digital Credential API, and users will be able to select the credential from the available ones – that will satisfy the request. After selection, Android will redirect the OpenID4VP request to the app or credential holder itself, and present it back to the verifier. As mentioned, issuance of digital credentials are also now possible with the OpenID4VCI request. With this, users can choose the app/credential holder where the digital credential has to be stored.

Regarding the early adopters, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet, and 1Password will be the adopting the features initially, letting users recover their accounts, access health services, and verify profiles with digital credentials.

This article will be taking readers/developers through the steps on how to use Jetpack Compose XR library, how to adapt apps for Android XR headsets, and on how to create an immersive user experience. Using the below given codelab, readers/developers will be able to boost their Android XR development skills and learn how to enhance a single screen app to provide an immersive user experience for Android XR headsets.

Read more about it below.

Enhance Single Screen Apps for Android XR Headsets and Offer an Immersive User Experience

As mentioned this codelab will be taking readers/developers step by step on how they can convert a single screen app and provide an immersive user experience on Android XR headsets. For this purpose, they will require Android Studio preview, a PC device that can run Android XR emulator, familiarity with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, and experience in creating Android virtual devices and also running apps on them.

As the first step, start by getting the code for this codelab in the xr-fundamentals directory that can be found within the xr-codelabs GitHub repository. Using this command – git clone https://github.com/android/xr-codelabs.git, clone the repository. Readers/developers can also download the repository as a zip file too as an alternative step.

Next launch Android Studio and import the project by selecting the xr-fundamentals/start directory. If by chance at any point you get stuck or want to see the full project, the solution code is present within the xr-fundamentals/part1. Then opening the project in Android Studio, familiarize yourself with the code.

Before proceeding, know about XR concepts like Modes and Spatial Panels. There are two modes in which apps run on Android XR headsets – Home Space Mode and Full Space Mode. In Home Space Mode, multiple apps run side by side for offering multitasking. On the other hand, in Full Space Mode, a single app is only being run making use of additional capabilities without any boundaries. Spatial Panels serve as fundamental building blocks for Android XR apps. An app is contained in a single panel when in Home Space Mode, while users will be able to break an app content into one or more panels in Full Space Mode.

To know how the app looks in Home Space Mode, it can be run in the Android XR emulator. For this, first install the Android XR system image and create an Android XR virtual device. Users can move into the enhancing process after this. Also, before adding XR-specific functionality, users will have to add a dependency – androidx.xr.compose:compose for XR library on the Jetpack Compose. Furthermore, update with libs.version.toml and build.gradle.kts (Module :app) files, and then perform a Gradle sync.

The app must run in Full Space Mode to use XR features such as Panels, and this can be done either programmatically or by adding a directive to the app manifest. To enter Full Space Mode programmatically, affordances can be provided in the UI to control the action. For this, create a new file – ToggleSpaceModeButton.kt in the com.example.android.xrfundamentals.ui.component package, and add ToggleSpaceModeButton.kt and XRFundamentalsTopAppBar.kt composables. After this, run the app and enter Full Space Mode by clicking on the icon at the top right corner.

To instruct and start an activity in Full Space Mode, include <property> and <activity> elements. Following the process, when the app is launched, it directly takes users to full Space Mode. To go back to the default behavior, remove the <property> element.

With all these above mentioned steps, the app has received the capability to enter and exit Full Space Mode. Users can now make use of the capability and one way to do so is to split app contents into multiple panels. Begin the process by adding a Subspace composable after the Scaffold composable in the XRFundamentalsApp composable. Then add a SpatialPanel within the Subspace composable, and include the Scaffold within it to bring the controls to the top of the app bar. Run the app to see the SpatialPanel in Full Space Mode – but in a very small appearance.

Supply a SubspaceModifier to make it larger, and run it again to see the change. Use Surface for adding a panel for secondary content. Make use of SpatialRow and SpatialColumn composables to layout the panels in a row. Add resizable subspace modifier, and then set appropriate minimumSize and maximumSize parameters. In the same way, use the movable subspace modifier to make the panels moveable.

The California-based tech company – Google is currently conducting this year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) from the 17th of March 2025 to the 21st of March 2025, and the brand has now unveiled new Play Console tools that will help Android gaming apps to deliver better performance and stability.

Check out more about the newly-unveiled Play Console tools below.

Google’s New Play Console Tools

Play Console offers game developers the required tools to monitor as well as improve gaming performance following the game release and the new Play Console tools will be further helping developers achieve this. Low Memory Killers (LMK) is one of the new tools that has been included in Android Vitals, and it will be providing game developers insights into memory constraints that could cause game crash.

Moreover, insights about the user distribution or player reach can also be received through Android Vitals, and it will also notify game developers regarding device-specific issues.

Following last month’s Android 16 beta 3 update, the final beta version of the Android 16 beta program has been officially released. This build will be the last call for testing before the Android 16 stable version launch of Q2 2025.

Here’s more about it.

Android 16 Beta 4 – Now Released

The Android 16 beta 4 version update that has now been released is the second platform stability release, and all the developer APIs as well as all the app-facing behaviors have been finalized. To add, the latest beta build includes new optimizations and bug fixes, and Android 16 supported applications can be made available from the Google Play Store hereafter.

On smartphones, tablets, and foldable devices from Android 16 beta partner brands (like Google Pixel, iQOO, Lenovo, OnePlus, Sharp, OPPO, Realme, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Honor), users/developers can now run apps on the latest Android 16 beta 4 build. App developers will have to make necessary changes and updates to prevent compatibility issues, and the testing process involves them to install the app on an Android 16 beta 4 running device/emulator. As every Android release comes with privacy, security, and UI-related improvements, this is needed to ensure that no changes affect the app.

For devices currently running on Android 16 beta 3 and for users who are already in the Android beta program, the Android 16 beta 4 update will be rolled out as an OTA update. Supported Pixel devices can also be enrolled for this beta program, while non-Pixel users can make use of the 64-bit system images with Android Emulator in Android Studio. Android 16 beta 4 users are advised to provide their valuable feedback concerning bugs and issues, so as to address them in the future release.

As earlier revealed, two API releases are planned for this year in 2025 – a major SDK release in Q2 2025 and a minor SDK release in Q4 2025. The incremental or features-only updates roll-out in Q1 2025 and Q3 2025 further ensures continuous quality. The brand also plans to continue having Android quarterly releases from now on.

Stay tuned for more updates.
