You may soon see Robot Dogs at Cape Canaveral station
According to the Department of Defense, the US Space Force is sending robot dogs to monitor its Cape Canaveral station. The Space Force, the newest division of the US military, said on Monday that it is using “quadruped unmanned ground vehicles (Q-UGVs)” from Ghost Robotics for “damage assessments and patrol.”
The United States Space Force (USSF) is the only autonomous space force in the world today and the space service branch of the United States Armed Forces. It is one of the eight uniformed services of the United States. The Space Force is one of the three civilian-led military agencies inside the Department of Defense, together with its sibling branch, the U.S. Air Force, that make up the Department of Air Force. With 8,400 military members and 77 spacecraft under its command, the Space Force is the smallest branch of the American armed forces.
According to the Department of Defense, the US Space Force is sending robot dogs to monitor its Cape Canaveral station. The Department of Defense stated in a statement that it intends to utilise these canine-like robots to perform laborious and repetitive patrol jobs that can be mechanised. Images from the Department of Defense show employees inside a hangar using what seems to be a hand controller to operate the robot dogs.
The US Air Force has also tested these robots in 2020 for perimeter security activities and to test the network’s data-sharing capabilities for its Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS). Therefore, robot dogs have been seen working with federal forces in the US before.
The US Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) intention to use robot dogs to patrol the country’s southern border with Mexico was criticised in February of this year.
