Japanese Government Confirms Killnet is responsible for the cyberattacks

Japan announced on Wednesday that it is looking into the possible involvement of a pro-Russian group after numerous government websites were disrupted the day before. The pro-Russian group “Killnet” was quoted in the media as claiming responsibility for the attacks on government websites.

As per the Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno, the Japanese government is investigating whether the problems trying to access more than 20 websites across four government ministries were caused by a denial attack.  Matsuno said,”We are aware that the (Killnet) hacker group was behind the attacks, but at the moment we are still investigating the cause of the failures, including the group’s involvement”. Further, on this he said, the government services failed to be accessed on Tuesday, but after sometime, the services were restored itself.

One of the tweets by Japan’s digital agency, it was clear that the e-Gov official portal was facing certain log-in inconveniences. However, the issue was not specified. It is still being assumed that this governmental portal, too, was one of the targeted websites that day.
