In order to prevent security threats, the Indian Railways has planned to install Integrated Security System (ISS). This system will help in identifying the suspected terrorists as well as it will detect the unattended luggage from the railway premises including train coaches.

In an interaction with IANS, Arun Kumar, Director General of RPF was quoted saying, “Other than the deployment of the RPF and the RPSF (Railway Protection Security Force) we have launched a commando battalion known as CORAS commando.”

Kumar said that the RPF is presently using new technology on a big scale to ensure railway security. Additionally he said, “Under the ISS, we have installed a number of CCTV cameras at a number of places, in train coaches, railway stations and we are going to analyse the feed from the CCTV cameras, using this artificial intelligence. This will provide us with important feedback for the safety of the railway premises.”

More than 202 stations including New Delhi Junction has the ISS system installed so far, stated the RPF Director General. The national carrier has decided to install CCTV cameras at all the major stations to watchdog the miscreants and the terrorist activities on the rail network.

As indicated by the Railways, the national transporter conveys about 1.2 million passengers daily on its vast network of over 62,000 km. Besides the face detection system, the RPF is trying to use many other softwares to analyze the entire safety system, Kumar said.

This seems to be an innovative step taken by the Railways to ensure the security at the major railway stations.
