Pornhub Will Only Accept Cryptocurrency For Its Premium Service

The PornHub story continues to develop. Following the New York Times articles expose on PornHub, Payment partners, Visa and Mastercard have cut off ties with the company along with many other big credit card companies.

The adult website announced that it is now accepting only cryptocurrency payments for its premium service.

Post that, Pornhub began accepting Tron, Verge and Tether payments. Recently Pornhub also started accepting Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Dash, Ethereum, Ethereum Classic, Litecoin, Monero, NEM, Tether, Tron, ZCash and Waves which are all different types of cryptocurrency.

The New York Times expose reported that the website was allowing harmful content. The likes of women and even children being assaulted and taken advantage off to be streamed and download from its website.

A report in Decrypt praised Visa and Mastercard’s decision to not support payments on Pornhub and called it the latest and the “most impactful” instance of a payment processor blocking funds to the site and its performers. The first payment processor to pull out from the site was PayPal.

With the onset of the pandemic, the site had been receiving a lot of traffic. Reportedly, 3.6 billion in August, 2020.

PornHub hasn’t officially released a statement regarding the change except saying that it is targeted for being an porn site. An adult performer and cryptocurrency veteran Allie Eve Knox told Decrypt that it is unfortunate that Visa and Mastercard are playing legal games to hold Pornhub accountable. Knox added that it is not secret that the website was operating in dubious ways and said that performers have been saying for a long time that Pornhub needs to be accountable and follow the law.

She added that the move by the likes of Visa and Mastercard would hurt content creators more than they would hurt Pornhub. If performers are not able to take Visa and Mastercard, they are not making money and that is problematic because a lot of these performers use this as their main source of income.

Fortunately for PornHub’s business model which depends heavily on advertising revenue that will not be hugely impacted by the payment change.
