X (formerly Twitter) to Shut Down ‘Communities’ by May 6th, Cites Low User Engagement

Following the rollout of the ‘Custom Timelines’ feature (currently in Early Access for Premium subscribers on iOS), X (formerly Twitter) has now announced that it is shutting down its ‘Communities’ feature on 6th of May 2026. In its place, the platform is bringing a more direct, chat-focused approach to user interaction.

X to Remove ‘Communities’ Feature; Introduces New GroupChat Links

As stated above, the ‘Communities’ feature on X, which enabled users to join Facebook-style groups, will be discontinued due to lower engagement levels, as stated by Head of Product at X, Nikita Bier.

Speaking more, X has upgraded the existing ‘XChat’ feature, and will now allow users to generate joinable public links for group chats and share them directly on their timeline, removing the need for manual invitations. This will allow followers to instantly join conversations. Currently, a 350-member limit/per chat is there in the group chats, and as per Nikita, this limit is expected to increase in the future.

Coming to the transition, users who are currently managing an X Community are given only a two-week window to make the necessary changes as the May 6th deadline approaches. In his post, Head of Product at X, Nikita Bier, recommends that Community administrators create a new link for the group chats in XChat at the earliest and pin it to their existing Community page, so that current members can easily join the new chat setup before the old Communities framework is removed completely.

Stay tuned for more such updates.
