OpenAI rolls out ChatGPT for teens; Includes age-appropriate protections, tools that support balanced use and optional parental controls

To safeguard teenagers from risk areas such as violence, sexually explicit or graphic content, self-harm and more from its AI model, OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT for teens.

ChatGPT for Teens

ChatGPT for teens is the same capable ChatGPT, designed to help teens learn, work through problems and explore new ideas. It includes age-appropriate protections, tools that support balanced use, and optional parental controls.

Features

  • Teen-specific onboarding that introduces tools and settings for learning, creativity, and everyday life
  • Learning-focused starter prompts that help start studying, practice skills, or explore ideas
  • Study mode and other learning-focused flows that can offer hints, step-by-step guidance, follow-up questions, and knowledge checks.
  • Homework reminders that may suggest study mode and help you work through assignments step by step.
  • Learning tools, including quizzes when available, that help you practice and check your understanding.
  • Study hours that let you or a linked parent or guardian choose when eligible new chats start in study mode.
  • Reminders that may encourage breaks and make clear that ChatGPT is an AI tool.
  • A reminder may appear before some image uploads, encouraging teens to check for sensitive information before sharing.
  • Built-in, age-appropriate safeguards to help reduce exposure to sensitive or potentially harmful content.

Do note that the feature availability may vary by region.

Further, parents and guardians can optionally link accounts through Parental Controls to manage selected settings. You or a linked parent or guardian can use Study hours to choose when eligible new chats start in study mode, without blocking access to ChatGPT. Quiet hours can limit access to ChatGPT during scheduled times.

OpenAI has specified that Parental controls do not let a parent or guardian read or monitor the teen’s conversations. If the company sends a safety notification, it shares only the information needed to help support the teen’s safety.

Teens can use ChatGPT to learn, build, create, and get help with everyday questions. ChatGPT for teens adds learning-focused tools, reminders that encourage balanced use, and age-appropriate protections.

This launch builds on the foundational work to support OpenAI’s platforms, including introducing parental controls, updating the under-18 model spec, creating the Teen Safety Blueprint, rolling out age-prediction and expanding features to support learning and healthy AI use for teens.

Availability

ChatGPT for Teens is rolling out globally to eligible teen accounts on Free and paid personal ChatGPT plans. Full availability in Australia is expected on September 8.

To get started-

You do not need to turn on ChatGPT for Teens. If your account is eligible and account-provided age information, verified age, or age prediction indicates you are under 18, ChatGPT automatically enables ChatGPT for Teens.
