Today, Canva has officially introduced its first vision=language model for design, Canva Brush, built by Canva Research.
Introducing Brush: Our first vision-language model for design. 🖌️
Brush sees your design’s layout, layers and vibe the way you do, and edits alongside you. Fix one line of text, restyle a whole deck or build from a blank page.

Canva Brush
Brush sees your design, understands how it’s put together, and makes the changes you ask for, from a single line of copy to every slide in a deck. It refines the design around the generated image.
With Brush, creating with Canva AI is now:
- 69% faster for general design editing tasks (compared with Canva’s previous agent)
- 46% lower cost per edit task (compared with Canva’s previous agent)
- 100% in your control, as every design is always editable
Rather than treating design as a series of isolated decisions, Brush can continually evaluate and improve its work, helping you take an idea from a rough sketch to a polished design that’s ready to share. Behind the scenes, it uses an agentic loop that writes and runs code to adjust design elements, and can then inspect what’s happening on the page to guide its next step. Everything Brush creates is fully editable, just like any other Canva design.
In Canva’s internal testing, Brush matched or exceeded the quality of its previous setup on most editing tasks, with particularly strong results in restyling designs and adapting them to different formats.
Brush is trained to support every step from draft to published design. The company has developed a reward system for reinforcement learning that evaluates the model’s work against a range of criteria, including visual quality, how well the layout follows design principles, and whether the model completed the task as requested.
You can use Brush for various tasks:
- Restyle an image
- Make a change across a multi-page design
- Remix assets for different channels
The company announced that this is the first version of Brush, and there’s plenty more to come, like Brand Kit support.
Starting today, Brush is powering supported design edits in Canva AI for people on Canva Pro plans, with wider availability coming soon. Just open an existing design in the editor, or attach or link to a design in Canva AI. To make sure Brush is powering your full editing experience, select ‘Brush’ from the dropdown list in Canva AI.
