Apple’s Music Recognition feature, built into iOS and powered by Shazam, is set to receive a useful update in the upcoming iOS 18.2. Discovered by Macworld, the beta version introduces geotagging, allowing users to see where they identified a song. This update could make the standalone Shazam app less necessary for many users.
New Geotagging Feature in Beta
As part of the iOS 18.2 beta, the Music Recognition tool now includes a “Musical Memories” feature. It tags the location of each song identification, adding context to your song history. To enable it, users can:
- Access Music Recognition from the Control Center.
- Tap and hold the toggle, then select History.
- Grant location access when prompted.
Once activated, all future song identifications will include location data, which can be viewed in the song history.
Availability
The geotagging feature is currently part of the iOS 18.2 beta, available to developers and public beta testers. It is expected to roll out in the final iOS 18.2 release in the coming weeks. While not a game-changer, it’s a subtle but useful update that integrates Music Recognition more seamlessly into your Apple device
