Is skype increase in usage makes it the next zoom for meetings?

Although the global economy is facing an unprecedented challenge of fast-spreading Coronavirus infection and millions of people across the world are confined to their homes, the global appetite for online video content may never be stronger than it’s right now. Also due to recent flaws outlined in the Video Conferencing app “ZOOM“, people have started to move from it and started looking for options. Making a tremendous increase in the usage of the Skype App for video conferencing.

This is clearly shown in the dramatic rise in the count of subscribers of Skype, a telecommunications application owned by Microsoft. Skype has witnessed a tremendous increase in usage as its daily users have increased to approximately 40 million in March, the company said in a blog post.

In addition to this, Skype to Skype calling minutes have increased by around 220% as well, according to the company’s report.

The record surge in the subscriber base of Skype may be attributed partly to the privacy and security concerns raised over other apps such as Zoom. As a result, users are switching to alternate video-conferencing applications for holding calls and meetings in the era of social distancing.

Earlier, the Skype platform also introduced the ‘Meet Me’ feature, which makes it convenient for the subscribers to invite anyone, including their friends or family members, to a Skype call, even if they do not have a Skype account.

This is possibly a strategic move by the company to gain a competitive advantage to make the application more user-friendly.
