A research team at the University of Birmingham has defined and visualized the shape of a photon, according to their study published in Physical Review Letters. The team developed a computational framework to analyze photon propagation patterns. This approach organized the numerous possible photon propagation scenarios into measurable groups, allowing for a detailed analysis of photon behavior.

Lead author Dr. Benjamin Yuen and the research team produced two main outcomes: a visualization of photon shape through mathematical calculations and a model describing photon-emitter interactions and energy radiation patterns. Professor Angela Demetriadou, a study co-author, identified several factors affecting photon characteristics, including geometric conditions, optical properties, color variations, and emission probability. Their research indicates that previously overlooked background data contains information about these interactions.

The findings may contribute to the development of:

  • Sensor technology
  • Solar cell design
  • Quantum computing
  • Communication systems
  • Chemical process analysis

The study addresses a long-standing challenge in quantum physics regarding photon propagation in various environments. The computational framework developed by the team allows for the analysis of photon-emitter interactions and far-field energy radiation.

The research is documented in Physical Review Letters, providing data for further study of light-matter interactions at the quantum level.
