ISRO’s LVM3 rocket successfully launches GSAT-7R (CMS-03), Indian Navy’s advanced communication satellite

As earlier announced, ISRO has successfully launched the GSAT-7R (CMS-03), Indian Navy’s advanced communication satellite, on its LVM3-M5 launch vehicle, also referred to as Bahubali, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

The satellite has been successfully inserted into a geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO). This satellite weighs about 440kg and is said to be the heaviest communication satellite to be launched to GTO from Indian soil. The launch marks a major milestone in strengthening the Navy’s space-based communications and maritime domain awareness.

The GSAT-7R satellite is said to provide robust and secure telecommunication coverage across the Indian Ocean Region. Its advanced payload features transponders supporting voice, data, and video links over multiple communication bands, ensuring seamless connectivity between the Navy’s ships, submarines, aircraft, and Maritime Operations Centres. The satellite is said to be designed to provide communication services for at least 15 years and stands as a testament to Aatmanirbhar Bharat, enabling the armed forces to operate with enhanced situational awareness and secure, high-capacity communication links in complex maritime environments.

The launch also showcased the capacity of the LVM3 rocket that further strengthens ISRO’s preparations for Gaganyaan, its maiden human spaceflight programme, which plans to use an evolved LVM3 variant.
