Blood Moon or Lunar Eclipse to Appear Today on the 14th of March 2025: To be Visible in the Western Hemisphere

Today on the 14th of March 2025, Earth will witness a Blood Moon AKA Lunar Eclipse as the Sun, Earth, and Moon align with each other, and this spatial visual event will be visible across regions in the Western Hemisphere.

Blood Moon or Lunar Eclipse – Appearing Today on 14th March 2025

NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) via its official X handle has announced an exciting news on how Earth today on the 14th of March 2025, at 2:26 AM ET (~ 11:56 AM IST) will witness a Blood Moon or Lunar Eclipse across the Western Hemisphere. People of North America, South America, Western Europe, and Western Africa will be able to see this spatial visual event. [Sadly, it won’t be visible in India due to the timing.]

In regions where this phenomenon is said to be visible, people won’t be requiring any specialized equipment to see it, and all they have to look for is a darker environment that is a little far away from bright lights to get a better view of it. Additionally, binoculars and telescopes can be used to further enhance the experience.

How Does Lunar Eclipse Occur and Why is it Called ‘Blood Moon’?

For those of you who don’t know, a Lunar Eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and the Moon align in such a way that the Moon falls in the shadow of the Earth, and in total Lunar Eclipse, the entire Moon will fall within the the umbra – darkest part of Earth’s shadow. During this phenomenon, the Moon appears Red – Orange in color, and that is why this phenomenon is also ‘Blood Moon’.

So you might obviously be thinking why it turns Red – Orange right? Rayleigh scattering which causes the sky to turn Blue and sunset/sunrise to turn Red – Orange is the reason behind it.
