Joseph Lister, 1st Baron Lister, OM, PC, PRS, FRCSE, FRCPGlas was a British surgeon, medical scientist, experimental pathologist and a pioneer of antiseptic surgery and preventative medicine. Joseph Lister revolutionized the craft of surgery in the same manner that John Hunter revolutionized the science of surgery.
In a recent tweet where one said, “Joseph Lister, the doctor who originally proposed using carbolic acid to cleanse and disinfect surgeons’ hands to avoid infecting their patients. He was mocked at first for his notion, but he is today known as the father of antiseptic surgery”.
Lister was ridiculed by the establishment, but he was right. We should question accepted wisdom and bow to the weight of evidence.
