A client of Akamai residing in Europe suffers from severe DDoS attacks over 30 days

An Eastern European organization encountered the largest distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack earlier in July 2022. The report says the target is a customer of the cybersecurity and cloud service company Akamai was hit by several DDoS attacks past 30 days.

Security researchers said that DDoS attacks had become a much more frequent tool of hacking since the start of the year. In this attack, the attacker floods the server with internet traffic to prevent users from accessing the network. In a DDoS attack, users can not enter desired sites and avail of its services.

Akamai said in a note that a number of record-breaking attacks occurred on July 21 and within just 14 hours they peaked at 853.7 Gbps and 659.6 Mpps. The security company tried to mitigate the attack and said that their client suffered 75 DDoS incidents over the past month. The said DDoS attack targeted the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) used for maintaining communication throughout the internet. The attacker also included UDP fragmentation, ICMP flood, RESET flood, SYN request flood, TCP anomaly, and other methods to disrupt the device.

Security researchers of Akamai also added that the probable DDoS attack origin is a “highly sophisticated global botnet” of infected devices. However, the company didn’t reveal the name and other profiles of the client who was severely compromised due to DDoS attacks. the reason behind the attack is also unclear states the cybersecurity company.
