From March 2025, India will Use USB Type-C as its Standard for Mobile Charging Ports: Let’s look into it

After the European Union made it mandatory for devices to use the USB type-C as the standard for charging ports, India has decided to follow the same path making it mandatory for all mobile phones to have a standard USB type-C charging port.

Here’s more about it

USB Type-C to become the Standard Charging Port in India

From March 2025, India will have all its mobile phones with a standard USB type-C charging port. As per the recent statement made by the Consumer Affairs Ministry, all the mobile phone manufacturers will have to adopt the USB type-C as the standard charging port for their future devices.

The decision was taken followed by the European Union’s Law which made it mandatory for devices to have a standard USB type-C charging port. This includes all the mobile phones, tablets, laptops and other wearable devices.

In India, most of the devices have the USB type-C as its charging port. However, there are still smartphones and feature phones with micro USB charging ports. Apple iPhones are also there with its own lightning ports.

With much research and taking into consideration of the global supply chain constraints and the availability of materials, manufacturers are given time till 2025 to make the necessary changes. They must also satisfy the BIS benchmarks set for the charging ports.

Laptops however are given more time to make the changes but there laptops already available in market with USB type-C as the charging port. India has also decided to look into a standard charging method for wearable devices as well.

All these changes are being made as part of the LIFE Mission(Lifestyle for Environment) launched by the the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. It aims at “mindful and deliberate utilisation” instead of “mindful and wasteful consumption”.
