Australian open: Sania-Ram pair cruises into mixed doubles quarterfinals

With a straight set victory over Ellen Perez and Matwe Middelkoop on Sunday, Indian Sania Mirza and American partner Rajeev Ram advanced to the mixed doubles quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
In the second-round match on Court 3, the unseeded Indo-American duo dispatched Australia’s Perez and the Dutch’s Middelkoop 7-6 (8/6),6-4 in one hour 27 minutes.
In the quarterfinals, Mirza and Ram will face the winners of another all-Australian second round tie between Sam Stosur and Matthew Ebden, and Jaimee Fourlis and Jason Kubler.
In the first round, Mirza and Ram defeated Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic and Nikola Cacic.
Mirza, a six-time Grand Slam champion, was knocked out in the first round of the women’s doubles earlier this week.
Mirza will retire after the 2022 season as the lone Indian in the mix in the season’s first Grand Slam after Bopanna and his Croatian partner Darija Jurak Schreiber bowed out in the first round of the mixed doubles event on Saturday.
