JioStar launched JioHotstar on Friday, combining the content libraries of JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar. The new platform comes after the November 2024 merger between Viacom18 and Star India.
The streaming service offers approximately 300,000 hours of content, including shows, movies, and live sports coverage. JioHotstar starts with a user base of over 500 million, though the company hasn’t specified if this number accounts for duplicate accounts across the previously separate platforms.
The platform features an asymmetrical seven-pointed star logo alongside the JioHotstar wordmark. JioHotstar will offer free access to its content library, including shows, movies, and live sports. The service provides three subscription tiers with varying features:
Mobile (Ad-Supported plan)
- ₹149 for 3 months / ₹499 per year
- Access content on 1 mobile device
Super (Ad-Supported plan)
- ₹299 for 3 months / ₹899 per year
- Access content on 2 devices simultaneously
- 1080p streaming quality
Premium (Ad-Free plan)
- ₹299 per month (available only via web browser)
- ₹499 for 3 months / ₹1,499 per year
- Access content on 4 devices simultaneously
- 4K streaming with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision support
Existing JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar subscribers will move to the new subscription plans once their current subscriptions expire. The former Disney+ Hotstar app has been updated to the new service, and users can download JioHotstar from the Google Play Store and Apple Store.
The service offers content in 10 Indian languages. Through partnerships with international studios, JioHotstar will include content from Disney, NBCUniversal Peacock, Warner Bros., Discovery HBO, and Paramount. The platform is introducing “Sparks,” an initiative to showcase Indian digital creators through various formats.
