Instagram introduces a new First Draft feature for creators

Yesterday, Instagram introduced a new way for creators to create a reel within the app called First Draft.

New First Draft feature on Instagram

First Draft gives creators a starting point for their Reels, so they can focus more on creativity and less on technical production. All you need to do is select your clips, and with one tap, the feature cuts the pauses and trims down your clips, so you have a starting point to build from in seconds.

But everything this feature does is reversible; you can reorder, remove, adjust or start over. First Draft is just introduced to handle the early video trimming so you can focus on technical production. The feature adapts to your footage and gets you past the starting point, whether it’s multi-clip montages, talking-head videos, or day-in-the-life content.

First Draft finds the pauses and silences in your talking videos and trims them, so what you said comes through without the gaps in between. You can select, edit and share without leaving the Instagram app.

How to access the First Draft feature?

There are two ways:

  • Open Reels gallery- Select 1+ clips- Tap the “First Draft” button at the bottom of your screen- Review edit- Proceed to full edit or publish.
  • Open in Instagram- Film your content- Tap the “First Draft” button- Review edit- Proceed to the full editor to publish.

The feature is initially available for iOS users only.
