Google introduces a new Open Source Maintenance Crew

Google on Thursday announced that it is introducing a new “Open Source Maintenance Crew” to boost the security of critical open source projects.

Also, Google created an Open Source Insights as a tool for look at the packages.

And also, to look out their dependency graphs. This is mainly used to determine “if a threat in a dependency may affect your code.” The constant cyberattacks have increased the risk of hacking. Hence this development comes as security in the open source software ecosystem.

The company stated that by this software , the developers can understand how their software works and the outcome of the changes in their dependencies. Consequently, the ‘Open Source Maintenance Crew’ is a new team of developers. They will be working on security related issues such as configuring updates.

The announcement was made at the White House Open Source Security Summit. There, Google joined the Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF) and the Linux Foundation to discuss issues regarding open source security.
