PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita to Close, Physical Disc Production for New Games Ending in 2028
This might break the hearts of some PlayStation users, but Sony has officially announced that it will be closing the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita devices. As per what has been shared, the PlayStation Store on PS3 will first close in select markets, starting with Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua in August 2026. For additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries, the PS3 PlayStation Store will be closed starting late 2026.
In all other countries, the PlayStation Store on both PS3 and PS Vita will be closed in July 2027. Once the store closes on these devices, users will no longer be able to make new content purchases. However, Sony has confirmed that players will still be able to download their previously purchased content after the closing date for the foreseeable future.
Speaking more, Sony says that as the PlayStation Store continues to evolve with modern commerce systems and updated payment processing standards, PS3 and PS Vita are no longer able to support these updates at the required level. Because of this, the company has decided to close the PlayStation Store on these older devices.
Another major update shared by Sony is regarding physical game discs. The company has confirmed that physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this, new games will be made available through the PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.
To note, this transition will have no impact on games that have already been released, or games that will be released before January 2028 in disc format. Sony mentions that this move comes as consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital formats.
The company has also pointed out that it will continue to provide choices regarding where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that is at retailers or through the PlayStation Store. However, with new PlayStation games moving to digital formats only after January 2028, this surely marks the end of an important physical disc era for PlayStation users.
Stay tuned for more updates.
