Pelé, the legendary Brazilian soccer player, was admitted to a hospital in Sao Paulo to continue his treatment for a colon tumour.
Edson Arantes do Nascimento, 81, is “stable and anticipated to be released in the next few days,” according to a statement made by Albert Einstein Hospital on Wednesday.”
Pelé’s secretary, Pepito Fornos, informed The Associated Press that Pelé is undergoing chemotherapy to treat a tumour discovered during routine checkups in late August.
Pelé was placed in intensive care for a short time following surgery on his right colon. He is recuperating at his house in Guarujá, about an hour outside of Sao Paulo.
Pelé won three World Cups, in 1958, 1962, and 1970, and is still Brazil’s all-time best scorer with 77 goals in 92 games.
