Nupur Sharma and Navin Kumar Jindal had already been suspended from the BJP’s primary membership. The suspension came after the BJP released a press release in which it stated that it respects all religions and condemns disparaging remarks directed at religious figures.
Sharma has been threatened by Islamists, including death threats since she made some comments about Prophet Muhammad based on Islamic texts that enraged Muslims. She said that because people insult the Hindu faith so frequently, they can likewise mock other religions, citing Islamic beliefs as an example. Mohammed Zubair, co-founder of Alt News and supposed fact-checker, took her statement out of context and unleashed an army of trolls and Islamists on Sharma.
Following the remarks, multiple FIRs were filed against Sharma, as well as requests for his murder via lethal injection.
