TRAI’s May 2025 Telecom Data
As mentioned by TRAI, 3.24 million new subscribers were newly added to the telecom user base last month in May 2025, bringing the total user base to 1.207 billion with a monthly growth of 0.27%. Looking more into it, the country’s two leading telecom operators – Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel gained more new subscribers, however for Vodafone Idea and BSNL – the things are the other way around.
For Reliance Jio, the brand acquired 27 lakh new subscribers in May 2025, slightly higher than the 26.4 lakh new subscribers of April 2025, and it had retained its position at the top with 41% market share. On the other hand, Bharti Airtel was able to gain 2.75 lakh new subscribers last month, which is significantly higher when compared to the 1.71 lakh new subscribers of April 2025.
In the case of Vodafone Idea, it lost about the same number of subscribers that Bharti Airtel gained. The company lost 2.74 lakh subscribers in May 2025. While this is significantly lower than the 6.47 lakh subscribers the company lost in April 2025, Vodafone Idea still stays in the negative territory. This continued drop in the customer base will obviously be an issue for the company which is already in debt with AGR dues and operational troubles.
Just like Vodafone Idea, the state-owned BSNL too saw a drop of 1.35 lakh in its user base in the month of May 2025. When compared to the 1.55 lakh drop of April 2025, this is slightly lower. Also to add, the public sector telecom operator now only accounts for less than 8% in the telecom market.
Speaking more, the urban subscribers now amount to 669.69 million with a tele-density of 131.76%, while in rural areas, the user base is 537.39 million with a lower tele-density of 59.33%.
