Jio follows Airtel in partnering with SpaceX to bring Starlink to India

So it turned out to be true that SpaceX’s Starlink will also be available via Reliance Jio. Just a day after Airtel announced its partnership with SpaceX to bring Starlink to India, Jio has announced that it will also be running a partnership with SpaceX for Starlink.

As per the press release by Reliance Jio, the agreement between Jio and SpaceX aims to offer Starlink’s high-speed satellite broadband services to customers in India. This partnership, subject to regulatory approvals, will enable Jio to distribute Starlink through its retail and online platforms. By integrating Starlink into its broadband ecosystem, Jio aims to expand high-speed internet access to remote and underserved regions of the country.

Expanding Connectivity in India

The partnership will leverage Jio’s extensive telecom infrastructure and SpaceX’s Starlink low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network to enhance connectivity nationwide. Jio, known for its aggressive expansion in India’s broadband sector, sees Starlink as a key component to complement its existing JioFiber and JioAirFiber services, particularly in rural areas where traditional broadband options remain limited.

Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio, commented on the collaboration, stating: “Ensuring that every Indian, no matter where they live, has access to affordable and high-speed broadband remains Jio’s top priority. Our collaboration with SpaceX to bring Starlink to India strengthens our commitment and marks a transformative step toward seamless broadband connectivity for all. By integrating Starlink into Jio’s broadband ecosystem, we are expanding our reach and enhancing the reliability and accessibility of high-speed broadband in this AI-driven era, empowering communities and businesses across the country.”

SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell also praised the agreement, saying: “We applaud Jio’s commitment to advancing India’s connectivity. We are looking forward to working with Jio and receiving authorization from the Government of India to provide more people, organisations, and businesses with access to Starlink’s high-speed internet services.”

As the battle for India’s satellite broadband dominance heats up, both Jio and Airtel are expected to push aggressive strategies to make Starlink a household name. Consumers, especially those in remote areas, stand to benefit the most as telecom giants race to provide faster, more reliable internet access.
