Teenager arrested for hacking former High Court judge’s Facebook account

A joint police squad from Nainital, Uttarakhand’s Matia police station and Mallital police station has arrested Class 12 student Rajibul Mistri on suspicion of hacking Justice Raghvendra Singh Chauhan’s (retired) Facebook account. A former Chief Justice of the Telangana and Uttarakhand High Courts was the victim.

The culprit was brought before a local court, which had given Mallital police officers permission to transport the suspect to Uttarakhand on remand. Although no action was taken at the time, Justice Chauhan’s (retired) Facebook account had initially been compromised in May 2022. However, at the time, it wasn’t given much weight. On July 18, however, the identical Facebook account was once more compromised, and this time, offensive statements were posted on the platform.

An investigation was launched after a FIR was lodged at the Mallital police station in Nainital. The investigation team found that a mobile phone registered in the name of Mistri had been used to break into the former Chief Justice’s Facebook account. Four Mallital police officers, led by sub-inspector Deepak Bisht, traveled to Matia and made contact with the local police, who assisted them in locating and apprehending Mistri.

Mistri admitted, when being questioned, that he had twice hacked the former chief justice’s Facebook account. He continued by saying that he played the part of an ethical hacker and had no malicious motives for the act. Additionally, his mother insisted that her kid was blameless and that playing with his phone was his habit. Mistri comes from a low-income family, and his father makes a living by operating a roadside snack shop.
