Google Releases the First Developer Preview of its Next Android 15 Operating System

Alphabet Inc.’s Google had officially unveiled the stable version of the Android 14 operating system late last year and now, the brand has released the first developer preview of the next Android 15 operating system. Google is also inviting developers to collaborate with them in making Android better.

Android 15 First Developer Preview Released

The next Android 15 OS is being developed in continuation with Google’s aim in improving productivity, minimizing battery consumption, maximizing the performance of apps, as well as in protecting its users’ privacy and security. It will also be providing applications the compatibility with premium device hardware. Tooling and libraries will also be provided in enabling apps to make the best use of AI. Better optimizations will also be made to cater to large-screen devices such as tablets and horizontal and vertical foldable smartphones.

Speaking more about this newly-released Android 15 developer preview, the latest version of the Privacy Sandbox on Android, Health Connect by Android, File Integrity Manager, Partial Screen Sharing, more in-app camera controls, UMP support to virtual MIDI apps, Power Efficiency Mode, GPU and CPU Work Durations, and Thermal Headroom Thresholds are some of its new features or capabilities.

Regarding the Android 15 OS roll-out schedule, developer previews will be released in the months of February and March 2024, and later starting from the month of April 2024 to May, June, July 2024, and maybe more, the beta releases will take place. With the beta releases of June and July 2024 itself the platform will achieve stability and the final release will accordingly be scheduled, possibly in September or October 2024.

Users of the Pixel 6, 7, and 8 series, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet devices can flash the system image to try out the Android 15 first developer preview. Non-Pixel users can use the 64 bit system images with Android Emulator in Android Studio to experience the developer preview. It is also recommended to use the latest version of Android Studio Jellyfish/Jellyfish+ versions.
