Google files its first affirmative litigation targeting AI scammers to dismantle an organised cybercrime operation, “Outsider Enterprise”
For the past few years, the circulation of fake package alerts and urgent bank messages has increased, with many users falling for scammers using such messages. To prevent fraud and protect its users, Google has introduced several innovations and features. As cases continue to rise, the company is now taking legal action.
Google’s legal action against AI scammers
Google has filed its first affirmative litigation targeting AI scammers. The company’s civil lawsuit targets an organised cybercrime operation known as the “Outsider Enterprise.” Google has filed a lawsuit to dismantle its infrastructure, coordinating with the FBI, which will be taking law enforcement actions.
The “Outsider Enterprise” is said to be based in China and coordinates through Telegram, distributing “phishing kits” that allow criminals to blast out fake text campaigns that look like they’re from Google and other trusted brands.
According to the figures shared by Google, the scale of the operation is massive:
- Hundreds of thousands of victims have been financially scammed, with losses estimated in millions
- 9,000 fake websites, over 1 million fraudulent URLs connected to this group
- 55,000 spam texts were flagged by Android users in just 2 weeks this past May
- 5 million messages were sent by the Enterprise to Android users containing links to Outsider-generated websites over these two weeks
Google is also advocating for seven bipartisan bills to fight back against scams, including those created with AI:
- National Strategy for Combatting Scams Act
- AI Plan Act
- Artificial Intelligence Public Awareness and Education Campaign Act
- Stop Schemes, Cyber Fraud, Abuse, Manipulation, and Swindles (SCAMS) Act
- Stopping Cross-border Attacks and Manipulation (SCAM) Act
- Stop Scams Against Seniors Act
- Strategic Task Force on Scam Prevention Act
The company will also continue to work with AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon to block the scam texts before they reach the users.
