Rajiv Kumar: Appointed as the Next Chief Election Commissioner | Set to take Charge on May 15

As per the recent reports, we came to know that, Sh. Rajiv Kumar will take over as the new Chief Election Commissioner on Sunday, May 15. He takes over as the poll body’s head from Sushil Chandra. Rajiv is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1984 batch. As per a government statement, he has served in numerous ministries at the federal level and in his state cadres of Bihar and Jharkhand.

Rajiv was appointed Election Commissioner in ECI on September 1, 2020. Sh. Rajiv Kumar was the Chairman of the Public Enterprises Selection Board before joining the Election Commission. He has over 36 years of Government of India experience and collaborated in several Ministries at the Centre and State levels in the Social Sector, Environment and Forests, Human Resources, Finance, and Banking sectors.

During his time as Finance Secretary, from September 2017 to February 2020, he was in charge of Banking, Insurance, and Pension Reforms. Kumar oversaw the financial services sector and was key in implementing new projects and improvements, among other things.

Furthermore, he guaranteed that the National Pension System (NPS) was streamlined, benefiting approximately 18 lakh central government employees, by increasing the required contribution by the government, allowing central government employees to choose their pension funds and investment patterns, and offering other tax reliefs. Rajiv founded Transparent Personnel Management to promote honesty and integrity. He was also a member of the NITI Aayog Task Force on restructuring.

Rajiv enjoys spending time with his loved ones. He is the proud father of two daughters.  He is an enthusiastic trekker who has climbed numerous Himalayan passes in Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttrakhand, and more. He enjoys meditation and Indian vocal classical and devotional music. As per the notification issued by the Law Ministry, it claims Rajiv will assume charge on May 15 after incumbent Sushil Chandra demits office on May 14,
