Google to End Chrome Support for Android 8.0 and 9.0 with Upcoming Release 139

If you’re using Android 8.0 (Oreo) or Android 9.0 (Pie), your journey with Google Chrome updates is about to come to an end. In an official statement, Google’s Community Manager Ellen T confirmed that Chrome 138 will be the last version of the browser to support these Android versions. The upcoming Chrome 139, scheduled for release in August 2025, will only be available for Android 10 and later.

While Chrome will still function on devices running Android 8.0 and 9.0, it will no longer receive updates, including security patches or new features. Users still on these versions can consider alternative browsers such as Firefox, which continues to support Android 5.0 and above. At the time of writing, Firefox is still receiving regular updates for those versions.

Android 8.0 (Oreo) was released in August 2017, and Android 9.0 (Pie) followed in August 2018. Given the age of these platforms, it’s not surprising that support is being phased out. August 2025 will officially mark the end of Chrome updates for smartphones running these older operating systems.
