PS5 update rolling out globally from April 24: Brings back classic PlayStation UIs and new Audio Focus feature

PlayStation is coming up with a new system software update for its PS5 console, with the rollout set to begin globally from April 24. The update will be delivered in phases, so while some users may receive it on day one, others might need to wait a bit longer. Sony hasn’t provided a specific timeline for the complete rollout.
One of the most notable additions in this update is the return of the classic home screen UI customisations from earlier PlayStation consoles, including PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4—a feature that was briefly introduced during PlayStation’s 30th anniversary celebrations. Due to the strong community response, these nostalgic themes are now officially making a comeback.
Key Features in the PS5 System Software Update
🎮 Classic Console UI Designs Return
- Players will be able to customise the PS5 home screen with designs inspired by the PlayStation 1 to 4 generations.
- This option will be available under a new “Appearance” section in the Settings menu.
- Each theme brings back visual elements from the respective console eras, giving users more personalisation options.
🔊 Audio Focus for Headphones
A new feature called Audio Focus is being introduced to improve audio clarity and accessibility for players using headphones.
- Allows users to amplify specific types of sounds (e.g., voices, footsteps, ambient effects).
- Accessible via Settings > Sound > Volume > Audio Focus, or from the Control Center for quick adjustments during gameplay.
- Offers four preset modes:
- Boost Low Pitch – for deep rumbles and engines.
- Boost Voices – for dialogue and party chats.
- Boost High Pitch – for sharp sounds like footsteps or metallic noises.
- Boost Quiet Sounds – to enhance soft ambient sounds.
- Each preset includes three intensity levels: Weak, Medium, Strong.
- You can adjust audio focus independently for left and right channels.
- Works with USB and analog headphones; not supported over HDMI/TV/soundbars.
