Google Pixel Fold 2 Design Leaked: Might be Narrower with a New Rear Camera Module

Google’s Pixel Fold was unveiled last year in the month of May and reports have already started to arrive about the next second generation Pixel Fold – the expected Google Pixel Fold 2. Previously, we came across a few hardware details of the device and now, an early test unit of the device has been shared online (thanks to Android Authority). A few design aspects are now known and when compared to the Pixel Fold, its successor might be coming with some significant design changes.

Read more about it below.

Google Pixel Fold 2 – Leaked Engineering Validation Test Device

The image of the upcoming Pixel Fold 2 device that is now available is the engineering validation test device and even if it’s long far away from the final stage device, some of the significant design changes that can be expected on the brand’s next foldable have been revealed.

Firstly to speak of its overall form factor design, the new Pixel Fold 2 might be narrower when compared to its predecessor. The previous Pixel Fold is wider than any other horizontal foldable device on the market and appeared more like a tablet when unfolded. While this made the multi-tasking experience of the Pixel Fold much more easier and comfortable, this also created an app incompatibility issue as most applications are still not well-designed for tablets. This problem is going to be resolved with the Pixel Fold 2’s narrower design.

The second design change is with its camera module. From the candy-bar camera module that we have seen on most Pixel devices, the upcoming Pixel foldable is revealed to adopt a rectangular-shaped camera island (projected with rounded edges) housing four camera sensors, an LED flashlight, and a microphone hole. Regarding the four camera sensors, three are expected to be the primary-wide, ultrawide, and periscope telephoto cameras, while the fourth can be an infrared sensor for measuring temperature, spectral/flicker sensor, or a ToF sensor.

While the image doesn’t give any idea about the inner foldable display, the report has pointed out that, unlike the Pixel Fold which incorporated the selfie camera into the top bezel, the Pixel Fold 2 will probably be placing it at the top-right corner of the display. To add, the inner and cover displays are also said to be more rounded and premium with a possible aluminum frame, resembling the Pixel 9 series.

As mentioned, this is the engineering validation test unit and in the process of getting to the final stage, there may be changes made from the brand’s side. However, the overall design may remain the same.

Regarding the hardware update, it was also reported that the Pixel Fold 2 is suggested to use the Tensor G4 chipset and a higher RAM of 16GB. Considering the latest Tensor G4 to be onboard means that the Pixel Fold 2 is likely to launch in October 2024 along with the Pixel 9 series smartphones, rather than in May 2024.
