SC allows Centre to continue with security cover for industrialist Mukesh Ambani

SC allows Centre to continue with security cover for industrialist Mukesh Ambani, his family members in Mumbai.

On Monday, June 27, the Supreme Court decided to hear the Union government’s petition appealing the Tripura high court’s rulings in a PIL challenging the Maharashtra government’s provision of security coverage to industrialist Mukesh Ambani and his family in Mumbai on Tuesday, June 28.

Tushar Mehta, the solicitor general, informed a vacation bench of Justices Surya Kant and J.B. Pardiwala that the high court lacked the authority to hear the PIL (public interest litigation) because the Tripura government had no involvement in the security cover that the Union government had provided to the Ambanis on the advice of the Maharashtra government.

The Tripura High Court issued two interim orders on May 31 and June 21 based on a PIL brought by one Bikash Saha, and they instructed the Union government to place the original file kept by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) regarding the threat perception and assessment report of Mukesh Ambani, his wife, and their children on the basis of which security had been granted to them.

The high court had ordered home ministry officials to come before it on Tuesday, June 28, with authentic records pertaining to the threat perception to the Ambanis, and had stated no further adjournments will be permitted. In light of this, Mehta stated he needed the appeal to be considered promptly.
