The Indian High Commission in Ottawa urged Canadian authorities to withdraw Kaali poster
The Indian High Commission in Ottawa has provided a statement following the controversy regarding a documentary poster named “Kaali” from 18 short documentary videos from “Under the Tent” at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, Canada. The Indian High Commission sternly mentioned Canadian authorities to take strong action and “withdraw all such provocative material” from being displayed.
According to the High Commission’s statement after receiving letters of complaint from the Hindu leaders, “Our Consulate General in Toronto has conveyed these concerns to the organizers of the event. We are also informed that several Hindu groups have approached authorities in Canada to take action. We urge the Canadian authorities and the event organizers to withdraw all such provocative material.”
The controversy stirred after the filmmaker Leena Manimekalai released a poster of her performance documentary film “Kaali”, the goddess with an LGBTQ community flag and a cigarette in hand. The poster claimed to disrespect the Hindu goddess in an unprecedented manner. FIRs have been filed by the Hindu groups both in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh for attempting to hurt the sentiments of the religion. The Toronto-based filmmaker has been charged with cases under sections IPC 153A and IPC 295A.
