Reliance Jio – Started Using UBR for Deploying 5G-Driven FWA Service

This update was shared by Reliance Jio’s Head of Strategy – Anshuman Thakur at the brand’s recent post-earnings conference. He states that in the past recent months, Reliance Jio has also started relying on UBR or unlicensed band radio equipment for making its 5G FWA service (Fixed Wireless Access) accessible to homes, and the use of which has helped in significantly reducing the cost of connecting homes with ultra-fast wireless broadband network. Thakur adds that this network configuration allows the brand to use a single radiating gear in order to serve multiple users, and this is how the deployment costs can be significantly lowered.

Speaking more, in the Indian market, 2.5 GHz, 5 GHz, and lower bands for WiFi, Bluetooth, and other applications does not require license, and the same is the case with UBR equipment which operates at lower frequency ranges. However, it should be noted that Reliance Jio relies on fiber if it is available, otherwise the brand relies on its 5G spectrum, and only in certain cases it uses UBR.

As of now, Reliance Jio holds 85% market share in the FWA services segment itself, with a 5.6 million customer base (till FY25). The brand is also aiming to achieve a target of 100 million connected homes too soon (JioFiber and JioAirFiber services combined), however a timeline for this has not been revealed yet.

Stay tuned for more updates.
