Central Government Temporarily Suspend Cell Broadcast Emergency Service, Here’s Why

Many users across India have recently received an alarming test message on their phones from the National Disaster Management Authority, as part of the Cell Broadcast alert testing. Well, the Centre has now reportedly suspended the service temporarily, and the reason behind it is quite surprising.

Centre Temporarily Suspends Cell Broadcast Service in India
We have previously reported about many users receiving an alert message on their cell phones titled “Extremely Severe Alert,” with the content, “This is a test message for Cell Broadcast alert testing in ROHINI, NEW DELHI. No action is required on receipt of this message. NDMA.”
However, users may not be receiving these test messages for the time being, as the Central Government has now temporarily suspended the Cell Broadcast alert testing service.
Although the exact reason was not mentioned in the order released on June 12, a report by The Hindu, citing sources, claims that one such alert message reportedly reached Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s contact number late at night, which is said to have triggered the temporary suspension.
This mobile-based disaster communication system, developed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, in collaboration with the NDMA, was launched on May 2nd 2026. It was introduced to ensure the timely dissemination of critical disaster-related information to citizens directly on their mobile phones.
Also to note, no specific official reason has been disclosed yet regarding the temporary suspension.
