Last month, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) introduced new rules to expand voice-and-SMS-only recharging options. The telecom providers were directed to offer Voice-and-SMS-only STVs for validity periods of 30 days or less. These changes were aimed at low-income consumers and subscribers who do not need data services.
Responding to these recent guidelines, Airtel has launched three new voice-and-SMS-only prepaid plans, making it the first telecom service provider to do so.
Airtel voice-and-SMS-only prepaid plans
Each plan provides unlimited local, STD, and roaming calls alongside a total of 300 SMS and complimentary access to HelloTunes.
The three new prepaid plans:
- Rs 185 plan: Includes unlimited voice calling and 300 SMS with a validity period of 28 days.
- Rs 203 plan: Includes unlimited voice calling and 300 SMS with a validity period of 30 days.
- Rs 206 plan: Includes unlimited voice calling and 300 SMS with a calendar-month validity.
These three prepaid plans do not include mobile internet access. These plans are aimed at feature phone users, secondary SIM holders, and subscribers who rely predominantly on WiFi networks for internet access. The plans are listed on the Airtel app and website.
Other telecom operators like Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea, and BSNL are also expected to soon comply with the mandate by introducing similar recharge options.
