And now, the company has introduced India’s first data-sharing Prepaid Family plan that allows family members to share mobile data across different locations in India.

Vi Prepaid Family Plan with data sharing

The prepaid family plan offers:

Active Vi prepaid subscribers can form a family group consisting of up to four users- one primary account holder and up to three secondary members.

Family groups are not restricted to a single telecom circle, allowing members based in different Indian cities or states to be linked under the same setup.

Each participant maintains their existing prepaid plan and validity schedule. However, members gain the ability to transfer up to 500MB of data per transaction to assist any linked user running low on balance.

The group setup and data sharing are managed through the official Vi app. In addition to shared allowances, participating members receive discounts of up to 10% on recharges completed via the platform.

Speaking about the launch, Avneesh Khosla, Chief Marketing Officer, Vi, said, “At Vi, ‘Vi Pe Sab Hain VIP’ is more than a campaign. It is a promise we are bringing to life through meaningful interventions to ensure inclusivity. Liberating international travel is the first among many. Traditionally, international roaming has meant buying a pack or making an additional purchase of a new local SIM or a travel eSIM and is mostly perceived as expensive. We are taking a disruptive approach by making international roaming a built-in benefit on our key plans. It is a simple but significant shift from ‘buy roaming when you travel’ to your ‘Vi number travels with you for free.’ This is exactly what ‘Vi Pe Sab Hain VIP’ stands for: identifying a real customer pain point and solving it through a disruptive, meaningful benefit for every Vi consumer, making them feel valued.”

Vi free international roaming

Depending on the plan, customers can avail of free international roaming for up to three trips a year. The included benefits vary by plan and cover different allowances for international data, outgoing calling minutes, calling & SMS, and travel validity.

With this announcement, Vi is offering customers savings of up to Rs 9000 per year. Eligible postpaid plans also include their applicable regular benefits, such as data, calling and entertainment.

The proposition covers individual, family and business travellers. Under eligible family plans, the primary and free secondary members can use their respective included roaming benefits.

This move addresses several challenges traditionally associated with international travel, including purchasing local or travel SIMs, losing access to an Indian mobile number, managing OTPs, relying on public WiFi and dealing with unexpected roaming charges.

The company has also launched a commercial featuring Shah Rukh Khan as part of its “Vi Pe Sab Hain VIP” campaign.

Eligible customers can access free international roaming and other benefits through postpaid plans starting at Rs 501, annual prepaid unlimited data plans and corporate plans starting at Rs 451 for enterprise consumers. Customers can activate the benefit through the Vi app by selecting the eligible international Roam-Free plans.

In April, TRAI released the Draft Telecom Consumer Protection (13th Amendment) Regulations 2026, proposing voice-and-SMS-only packs across all validity periods, so that users who do not need data can avoid paying extra for the service without even using it.

Previously, telecom companies introduced voice-only plans when TRAI mandated that every company offer one. And now, TRAI asked for feedback on the above-mentioned draft for approval. Reportedly, major telecom companies like Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vi have strongly opposed this proposal.

It is said that the three operators also urged TRAI to hold the status quo at an open-house discussion on this matter.

Reports reveal that, as per Jio, the 4G and 5G networks are fully Internet Protocol (IP) based, so voice runs as an application over the data bearer and separating the two is artificial. The company also said that separating data could lower barriers for fraudsters and increase spam and cyber fraud. According to Jio, its existing voice-only plans have seen limited demand, suggesting that most of its subscribers rely on data services.

Meanwhile, Vi is said to have warned about surprise charges, and Airtel mentioned that the voice-only plans could create a segment of users cut off from the digital ecosystem.

Consumers have argued that low-income, rural and elderly users are being forced to buy costly data packs that they don’t need.

Let’s see what TRAI decides based on the feedback received from consumers and telecom operators.

What is SMV?

SMV is a secure, network-based authentication technology that verifies a user’s mobile number in the background without requiring manual entry of verification credentials, switching between apps or waiting for verification messages.

When a Vi user accesses WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram on the Vi mobile network, the verification request is validated through the telecom network itself, delivering a faster and frictionless experience.

According to the company, Vi users may experience SMV-supported journeys across scenarios such as new user registration, mobile number verification, login and re-login, account recovery, and authentication during security checks. This translates into faster onboarding, fewer manual steps, and enhanced protection against phishing and digital identity risks.

Commenting on the launch, Abhijit Kishore, CEO, Vodafone Idea Limited, said: “Telecom networks are increasingly playing an important role in enabling safer digital experiences. With millions of consumers relying on Vi’s secure telecom network every day, we can build these experiences on a scale. Through our partnership with Meta, we are enabling SMV capabilities that enhance cyber safety and reduce fraud risks, while creating seamless authentication experiences for users across some of the country’s most widely used digital platforms.”

Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and Country Head, Meta in India, said, “Bringing Network-based authentication is a critical step forward in making verification simpler, seamless and more secure for users across our platforms. We’re pleased to work with Vi to bring this capability to their subscribers using WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram.”

Over time, Vi plans to further expand such capabilities across additional applications, ecosystem partners and advanced trust-based use cases, including enhanced authentication, fraud prevention and intelligent risk-based verification solutions.

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has announced a new prepaid plan priced at ₹349 under its Non-Stop Hero category. Some users may confuse this plan with Vi’s regular Hero Unlimited plan, which is also listed at the same price. However, the Non-Stop Hero plan works differently.

Unlike “unlimited 5G/Hero Unlimited” plans that impose daily data limits (such as 1.5GB per day) or restrict full-speed data to specific time windows, the Non-Stop Hero plan offers continuous high-speed data usage throughout the day and night, with no daily capping.

Under this ₹349 plan, users get unlimited 4G/5G data with no speed restrictions based on time or daily usage. That said, the plan comes with a Fair Usage Policy (FUP) limit of 300GB. Once this limit is exhausted, data speeds are reduced to 64kbps, in line with Vi’s FUP guidelines.

This plan is not available across all telecom circles. At present, it is available only in the following regions:

Himachal Pradesh

Jammu & Kashmir

North East Circle

Odisha

In addition to unlimited data, the plan includes unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS per day. After the daily SMS limit is exceeded, charges apply at Re 1 per local SMS and Re 1.5 per STD SMS.

The ₹349 Non-Stop Hero plan comes with a validity of 28 days, and the 300GB FUP data limit is also calculated over the same 28-day period, not 30 days.
