Will OpenAI Buy Chrome?
Following the finding that Google has monopolized the search market last year in 2024 by a federal judge – Amit Mehta, the Justice Department has proposed certain remedies that Google will have to bring to its business. These include the licensing of search data to its rival companies, stop providing exclusive paid positions on its services, and most notably – the selling of its Chrome browser. The brand responded to these measures pointing out that the proposed changes would make its everyday user products worse, and Google is preparing to fight against the Justice Department as well as to the state attorney generals over the matter.
A final decision on the matter is however set to be taken by Judge Amit Mehta in the month of August 2025, and if Google is ordered to sell its widely-used Chrome web browser, it will be marking the first court-ordered split of a US company following what happened with AT&T back in the 1980s.
Nick Turley, ChatGPT’s head was also called by the Justice Department in determining the changes that should be adopted by Google, and to a question on whether OpenAI would like to buy the Chrome web browser from Google, Turley has revealed of OpenAI’s interest in getting Chrome.
Speaking more, as of now, ChatGPT is available on Google Chrome as a downloadable extension, but deeper integration of Chrome with OpenAI will let the brand introduce an AI first experience for users. Turley also mentioned on how distribution is an issue that is affecting OpenAI, and even if the company was successful enough to integrate ChatGPT onto Apple’s iPhone devices, it hasn’t been able to do the same with Android smartphones.
We are still a few more months away before a final decision is taken on whether Google will have to sell Chrome (or not), and on knowing whether OpenAI will buy it from the brand (or not). Let’s wait and see.
