Ransomware group claims it has hacked multinational video game publisher Bandai Namco

Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. is a Japanese multinational video game publisher headquartered in Tokyo that previously published successful video games such as Ace Combat, Dragon Ball Z, and Dark Souls has recently claimed to have suffered from a major cyber attack. The ransomware group called ALPHV (alternatively referred to as the BlackCat ransomware group) added Bandai Namco to its latest victim list.

A group named vx-underground that monitors malware source codes tweeted on its account on July 11 attaching a screenshot of the ALPHV ransomware blog claiming the recent ransomware attack of Bandai Namco by the group, “ALPHV ransomware group (alternatively referred to as BlackCat ransomware group) claims to have ransomed Bandai Namco. Bandai Namco is an international video game publisher. Bandai Namco video game franchises include Ace Combat, Dark Souls, Dragon Ball*, Soulcaliber, and more.”

According to cybersecurity experts, Blackcat posts private employee data online if the victims refused to pay the ransom amounts. Sources say that ransomware has previously demanded millions targeting schools, public sectors, and non-profit organizations.

If the claim of vx-underground is legitimate then BlackCat will be again linked with hacking a multinational company. However, there is no report from the video game publishing company itself confirming the attack or the ransom amounts.
