20th Anniversary Macintosh
During its 20th anniversary celebration, Apple launched a special edition of the Macintosh. It was priced at $8000 in the market. And, the specifications weren’t great. Limited 12,000 units were produced. The price dropped below $ 2000 and yet, it didn’t work out. Apple was disappointed with the sales of the 20th Anniversary Macintosh.
The Apple Newton
In 1987, Apple attempted to join the PDA market. Apple Newton was its flagship product for the same. What was the main feature of the Apple Newton? Well, it was its ability to recognize handwriting that was input with a stylus. It’s too bad that this didn’t work out at all.
Further on, Apple Pippin was Apple’s try to enter the gaming market. This was somewhere in the mid-90s. The Apple Pippin was a mix of a gaming console and a computer with networking. However, it was cursed for having a terrible design. It was launched at a starting price of $ 599. But in the end, it was discontinued. This happened in the year 1997.
The Apple eMate is an amalgamation of a computer and a PDA. The Apple Newton and the Apple eMate shared the same software. Its affordability was a factor in buying. It was priced at $ 799. It acts as the lead source of inspiration for the iMac. Unfortunately, the product was discontinued 11 months after its debut.
The Power Mac G4 Cube
It had a creative design. It even had creative features. However, it was not affordable. Although it was officially launched in 2000, the Power Mac G4 Cube was gone before completing a year in the market. The brand had high expectations with this product of theirs. It unfortunately crashed.
FireWire is Apple’s data transfer technology. It was pretty expensive. Neither customers nor hardware makers perceived it too well. Licensing fees received by Apple were high. Eventually, FireWire failed in the market. This was in the year 2011.
iTunes users must be well-versed in Ping. Well, what was it? iTunes Ping was a social media network for iTunes users. It was absolutely free yet it failed. The main cause of the failure was listed as users’ lack of interest in another social media network. Slowly, it was discontinued within two years time from its introduction.
Apple launched eWorld to compete with AOL in the mid-1990s. At that time, AOL was the highest achieving Internet in the United States of America. eWorld was expensive. In the beginning, it was only available on Macintosh computers. The subscription rates were low. Sadly, Apple had to say Goodbye to eWorld in 1996.
Never heard of Lisa I right? Well, even if you haven’t, here’s what you should know. It was the first personal computer. It had a graphical user interface. However, many complained about the speed of the computer. Others said it was hard to operate. It was priced as high as $ 10,000 and eventually, it failed in the market. Lisa, I was gone and so was Apple’s flagship personal computer with a graphical interface. It is good to see technology progress but hard to see products vanish into the dark.
Apple is beyond its iPhones and MacBooks. It’s time we realize that. We must understand with great failure comes great success. That is exactly what goes into building a brand. Apple has come a long way in 2022 and continues to succeed with most of its products. But in its written history, its failure will also be an integral part.
