Scammers Now Making Use of Indian Phone Numbers to Execute Their Malicious Tricks?

This incident was shared by the tipster – @yabhishekhd who in an X post has revealed his experience on how he had received a robocall from a mobile phone number, in which he was told that his phone services will be terminated today and to know the reason why, he was asked to press ‘9’.

Based on the modus operandi, what happened is similar when compared to most scam calls and probably on clicking ‘9’, the tipster could have been directed to the person behind the call or may be to more preset messages. But what should be noted here is that, this scam call has not arrived from a ‘foreign number’, but from an ‘Indian number’ (~ Ahemdabad, Gujarat) starting with ’79’.

Robocall Scams Continues, But Now With Indian Numbers - X Post

From what it appears, scammers have gotten their hands on Indian mobile phone numbers, making people more prone to such malicious activities. In related news, we had also reported earlier about a threat actor who was selling over a billion WhatsApp phone numbers from across the world. The recent incident and the earlier report can be read side by side and it can be understood that people should from now on be more cautious about these scamming attempts, not just with ‘foreign numbers’, but also with ‘Indian numbers’ too.

Speaking more, earlier this year itself in January 2025, the Sanchar Saathi mobile app was introduced in India, and Indians can make use of it to report cyber frauds and fake calls from their mobile devices itself. Also, the RBI had mandated ‘1600’ series for bank calls and ‘140’ series for marketing calls to prevent scamming attempts.

All should keep these in their mind while facing similar scamming attempts, and advise others about this as well. In the future, scammers could outsmart and come with more new strategies, and the golden rule is to be aware always and stay cautious.
