Ransomware group BlackCat claims responsibility to attack on Italian energy agency, GSE

The BlackCat ransomware gang held itself responsible for a recent cyberattack that impacted the systems of Italy’s energy agency Gestore dei Servizi Energetici SpA (GSE) last week.

A GSE spokesperson asserted that they took down their website and systems to block the attackers from gaining access to their data. According to the spokesperson, they discovered the attack on Sunday and did the needful soon after. According to updates as on 2 September, GSE’s website was still down.

Authorities are unaware of what and how much of the agency’s data was compromised. Cybersecurity authorities along with the police are trying to figure this out while investigating the attack.

Prior to the disclosure by GSE, BlackCat reportedly added a new entry to their dark web data leak site. This entry claimed to have stolen a roundabout of 700 GB of files from Italian energy agency’s servers.

The attackers mentioned that the files consists of confidential data which are inclusive of contracts, reports, project information, accounting documents and other internal documentation.

This attack comes after another attack on an energy agency called the Eni Spa. Eni Spa is the largest energy company in Italy, comprising of more than 31,000 employees.

On the other hand, GSE is a publicly owned company. They are involved in promotion and support of renewable energy sources (RES) across Italy.
