OxygenOS and Realme UI May Soon Say Goodbye as ColorOS Could Take Their Place; R&D Cost Reduction Said to Be the Main Reason

A new report now highlights that OPPO might actually be working on shutting down OxygenOS and Realme UI, and soon all new-generation OnePlus and Realme devices may reportedly come with ColorOS itself.

Here’s more about the report.

Is OPPO Planning to Shut Down OxygenOS and Realme UI for ColorOS?

Those who follow the smartphone industry would already know that Realme and OnePlus are both associated with OPPO, and quite recently, the brand has been making a lot of changes around its smartphone business. OPPO is reportedly consolidating its smartphone brands in order to cut costs and streamline operations, bringing major structural changes for both OnePlus and Realme in China as well as global markets.

Speaking more, this restructuring is said to transition both OnePlus and Realme from independent smartphone brands into dedicated sub-series under a unified OPPO operating structure. Not only this, recently, OnePlus had also merged its Indian offline service centres with OPPO, while the brand is now said to be focusing more on sales and online operations.

Now, a new report coming from the publication Smartprix has claimed that due to the high cost involved in research and development, OPPO may be looking at a way to reduce its software development expenses by shutting down OxygenOS and Realme UI. Instead, the company may reportedly offer ColorOS on future OnePlus and Realme smartphones.

If this turns out to be true, it would mark a major change for both OnePlus and Realme users, especially because OxygenOS has been one of the key identities of OnePlus smartphones for many years. Realme UI too has been used by the brand on its own smartphones, even though it has always shared similarities with OPPO’s ColorOS.

To add, there is no official confirmation from OPPO, OnePlus, or Realme regarding this development yet. However, looking at the recent restructuring moves and the increasing similarities between these Android skins, such a shift may not come as a major surprise. When exactly this change will be implemented has also not been revealed in the report.
