Tesla changes South Korea ads after antitrust probe faulted batteries

According to screen shots captured by local media, the Model 3 sedan description on Tesla’s Korean-language website has been changed to say the vehicle can travel a “maximum” of 528 kilometres (328 miles) on a single charge, up from “more than” 528 kilometres.

The Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) announced this week that it had sent a report to the US electric vehicle (EV) maker, alleging that it had exaggerated the mileage of some of its models, including the Model 3, in violation of the Act on Fair Labeling and Advertising.

According to analysts, most electric vehicles may lose some of their driving range in cold weather. “The KFTC intends to hold a general meeting after providing the automaker with an opportunity to respond to our findings.” The Model 3 description on Tesla’s US website stated: “Go anywhere with “up to” 358 miles of estimated range on a single charge.” This distance is approximately 576 kilometres.

The Ioniq 5 midsize crossover from Hyundai Motor Co. is also described as having a “maximum” range of 429km on a single charge. Although analysts stated that driving range labelling should adhere to each country’s specific guidelines, the KFTC’s claims regarding Tesla’s mileage advertisement would most likely have little impact on the automaker’s sales in the country, citing Tesla’s dominant position and reputation in the EV market.
