Tinder rolls out Face Check feature in the U.S. to tackle fake profiles

Tinder has announced the rollout of its Face Check feature in the United States, beginning in California. The feature, which was recently launched in India, aims to tackle fake profiles, impersonation, and scams on the platform.

According to Tinder’s press release, Face Check will expand to more U.S. states in the coming months. The feature is currently mandatory for all new users signing up on the app. It is already available in Colombia, Canada, Australia, India, and several countries across Southeast Asia, with further global rollout plans where local regulations permit.

Yoel Roth, Tinder’s Head of Trust & Safety — and formerly Twitter’s Head of Trust & Safety — described Face Check as “the most measurably impactful Trust and Safety feature” he has seen in his career.

How Face Check Works

New members are required to complete the Face Check process by taking a short video selfie within the app.

The system verifies two key aspects:

  • That the person is real and physically present.
  • That their face matches the one shown in their profile photos.

Once verified, users receive Tinder’s Photo Verified badge, indicating that they have been authenticated. The feature also helps detect when the same face is used across multiple accounts, adding another layer of protection against fake or duplicate profiles.

Tinder reports significant improvements in user safety and trust since implementing Face Check, including over 60% decrease in exposure to potential bad actors, more than 40% reduction in reports involving bad actors, and notable improvements in users’ perceptions of authenticity and trust.

As per Tinder, Video selfies are used solely for the verification process and are deleted shortly after review. Tinder only retains a non-reversible, encrypted face map and face vector, which are used to verify new photos, detect fraud, and prevent duplicate accounts.
